The House of Trembling Madness
A strange name and also a strange place, but well worth a visit. This pub is on one of York’s most famous streets, Stonegate. Downstairs is a beer shop (the Council didn’t want any more pubs at street level on this street and so there are another two pubs with the same set up on Stonegate) and you go upstairs to a wonderful room with an ancient timbered ceiling. They serve real ales and snack style food. I can’t vouch for the food except the olives which were great, but they do serve a great selection of drinks and the atmosphere is excellent. One thing to watch for is that the pub is quite small and you may have to wait for a while to get in.
