Where to Eat

If you only have a short time in York we know that it can be overwhelming to look through all the guide books and websites for places to eat. We have therefore put together a list of places you may want to visit and from our own personal experiences these restaurants have delivered great food every time.

1. Roots, Marygate

Roots is now York’s first Michelin Star rated restaurant from the award winning chef Tommy Banks. This is a fabulous fine dining restaurant down near the river at the bottom of Marygate. The restaurant serves small plates cooked with a fabulous attention to detail. The quality of the food is outstanding. You will need to book in advance as the restaurant is very popular, particularly at the weekend.

2. The Star Inn the City

If you wanted to enjoy some fine dining while visiting York this is the place to go. Its beautiful location in the Museum Gardens on the river gives some great views while you enjoy your food. The menu is made up of locally sourced produce and the dishes reflect this with a very Yorkshire feel. If the weather is nice you can enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace and look over the river.

4. Mumbai Lounge

This is a more up market Indian restaurant. The menu here is wide and varied with all the usual dishes plus some interesting new ones. The service is quick and always friendly and the restaurant was a finalist in the English Curry Awards 2016. They also have a private dining area if you are visiting York for a special occasion such as a birthday and will happily arrange this for you.

5. Ambiente Tapas

This restaurant provides a real taste of sunny Spain in York! It is one of two restaurants of the same name run locally. The serve an interesting mix of authentic Spanish tapas. The main selling point of Ambiente is their wide selection of sherry and the waiters have a wide knowledge of them and are more than happy to help you find something to your tastes.

6. Fossgate Tap Bar & Kitchen

This is a quirky restaurant and wine bar. They serve classic British dishes such as fish and chip and steak and ale pie but also do more unusual dishes like a slow cooked chorizo stew. All their ingredients are locally sourced and each meal is prepared fresh for every order. The upstairs dining area is split of into individual rooms which just adds to the cosy atmosphere and there is also a cocktail bar stocked with plenty of unusual gins to keep you interested all night.

7. El Gaucho

If you love steak, then you will love El Goucho, York’s only Argentinian steak house. Great steaks and great Malbec to wash it down.  This is a family run business and that shows in the warm atmosphere and great customer service. The rustic wooden tables and alcoves really do make you feel like you are in Argentina enjoying a laid back meal with friends.

8. El Paradiso Del Cibo

This is a very simple Italian restaurant with excellent food. The menu is varied in that it offers some unusual dishes as well as the usual suspects. This is a family run restaurant, small and compact with a homely feel. The head chef and owner has worked in many restaurants before buying his own and creating his perfect Italian experience. The staff are always on hand to offer their expertise when selecting a dish from the traditional menu.

9. Bombay Spice

This is an acclaimed award winning Indian restaurant conveniently situated in the heart of the City of York close to York Minster and all York’s fantastic attractions. The restaurant offers a contemporary designed interior which is warm, stylish and inviting, the staff are friendly and helpful and they offer an excellent menu with a wide variety of Indian and Bangladeshi dishes, with a selection of special duck and fish dishes. Whatever you choose from the extensive menu, you can be certain that your evening will be spiced up with a visit here.

10. Rustique Lendal

There are actually two of these restaurants in York. The one on Lendal is the closest to our apartments, this is a highly rated French restaurant. You can get the majority of French classics here, moules and steak frites for example.  They cater for tables for two and also large parties. There is a restaurant upstairs and a much larger dining area and kitchen in the basement. The restaurant provides a set menu all through everyday so is very well priced. We recommend booking in advance as it can get busy especially on a weekend.
